A sports car on one of the toughest rallies in the world? Unthinkable. Until Porsche came along in 1984 and sent the Porsche 953, a modified 911 to the Paris-Dakar Rally - and won.
We are bringing the legend of yesteryear back to life, building on this legacy and transferring the original feeling to the new Porsche 911 Dakar. By letting both models meet in a full CGI sandstorm.
With the 911 Dakar, Porsche has now released a tribute to this legendary vehicle. Just like the car itself, the online film became a true "brand shaper"-something that helped define the brand in the long term. During the music video-like staged drive of the old 953, it suddenly meets its modern successor in a sandstorm. Both vehicles show off their rally genes to the fullest on a dynamic drive through the desert.
The audio is a mix of the legendary 80s new wave song "I ran" by "A Flock of Seagulls", amplified with specifically created SFX sound elements that maximize the feeling of a powerful dynamic drive through the desert. The song is dubbed out as if it were playing in the cars, or on the radio of the mechanics watching the race on TV - as if it were being atmospherically disturbed by the sandstorm. Together with the driving noises of the two sports cars, this results in a soundscape that also audibly evokes a rally and 80s feeling in equal measure.
The sandstorm is all CGI, we did a lot of sound editing to adapt to the cut. The whole sequence at the end is full of speed ramps for the phantom camera shots. It was also important to us to transfer motion and image elements from frame to frame so that the cut would look fluid and integrated - and thus make the film experience more immersive.
The film premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2022 and is since that shown on YouTube and all international Porsche channels worldwide.
