Studio Job, Joris & Marieke became intrigued by the legendary status of the shop windows of the Bijenkorf. In the past, people from the province came to Amsterdam specifically to view the famous fittings of the shop windows. The work of Karel Appel even hung earlier in the shop window of the Bijenkorf than in the Stedelijk.

Passing By – 110+ Years of Damrak, Amsterdam focuses on time. Only in this case, time moves in a linear fashion, offering a one-minute history of Amsterdam as seen through the large front window of the Amsterdam department store De Bijenkorf. Using MAXON’S Cinema 4D and Octane, Job, Joris & Marieke created ever-changing street scenes showing everything from important historical events to the evolution of cars and fashion designs.

With so many characters and props moving around, Job, Joris & Marieke had to model everything with as few polygons and details as possible. They needed to work fast but also had to make sure that Cinema 4D and Octane could handle the files. When Job, Joris & Marieke work with props and characters, they start by searching for a lot of reference images. Then, they stylize those to fit their style. Textures were really important in this film, especially those of the characters and their clothes because fashion was such an important part of portraying different periods in history.

And all this has led to 'Passing By' in which the viewer is rushed along in more than a hundred years Damrak.
