The music needed to capture the physical excellence and psychological focus of & “Major” Taylor. Early exploratory work ruled out an entirely electronic approach, so we decided to employ traditional instrumentation in a non-traditional way. The opening blasts of French Horn (fed though a synthesizer and guitar-amp) recall the visceral chase of a horseback hunt. This section then gives way to a string-quartet, played with such ferocity that two cello bows were destroyed in the recording session! The use of the studio as a scoring tool is a constant throughout, crunching and distorting to emphasise the physical pain of the protagonist. Where the action moves to a vast mysterious void, the music follows, echoing and receding to pure silence just before the moment he triumphs. At this point all we can hear is the silent focus of one of sporting history's most determined minds.
