Our entry for this award is our score for BBC Creative’s campaign to promote the BBC’s coverage of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
The composition, which is a blend of traditional Chinese percussion and audacious electronic noise, was an attempt in part to bring the experience of participating in the games to the audience watching at home.
So instead of producing a typical, generically inspirational soundtrack, we produced an intense, dark score out of white noise and harsh tones, and used traditional Chinese percussion (primarily the Hua Pen Gu) to pay homage to the host nation.
The brief was to create a genuinely cinematic soundtrack.
It had two requirements: to reflect the musical traditions of China, and to create a soundscape that represented athletes battling a bitter, hostile environment.
Broadly speaking, Chinese traditional music is sweet and ornate.
A blizzard is not.
So the challenge was to create a piece of music that evoked the musical traditions of China whilst simultaneously representing the bitter oppression of sub-zero temperatures.
