In 2021, the Amazon rain forest hit a record of criminal forest fires; compounded by climate change, this created the biggest drought in history. It was so critical, an island formed inside one of the largest water reservoirs in Brazil. To call attention to the water crisis, the Global Compact had the first environmental campaign to help make an island disappear. We put a castaway on the island, posting about his routine and data on the water crisis. He became an influencer on social media. His posts were also made into a diary, delivered to politicians, businesspeople, and opinion makers.
The campaign was a success, generating earned media on the main TV, print, and digital news outlets in Brazil.
It would be pretentious to say that the campaign ended the water crisis in Brazil. We still have a long way to go. But we like to think we contributed to make the situation less dire. In fact, thanks mostly to increased rainfall and some measure of awareness, the island has really sunk.
