This launch film for Black & Abroad’s new domestic travel platform, the Black Elevation Map, alternates between stately mountain footage and powerful images of Black business owners across the United States. The music plays like a beating heart, or a ticking clock. In voiceover, we hear original poetry written and performed by Newark-based Jasmine Mans. Her voice makes connections between the owners we’re seeing and a long continuum of Black contribution to the American landscape. By the end of the film’s sixty seconds, the film asks the viewer to consider that each of these people is a mountain, and that the country is brimming with elevation such as this. All a traveler would need to find it, is a map.
