After almost three years isolated from the rest of the world during the pandemic, Tourism Australia needed to go big to attract the world’s attention.
So we created a movie about it. Not just any movie, an action-packed animated film that was so immersed in Australian culture, characters, humour, location and language, it gave viewers a flavour of an iconic experience of our vast diverse land in just 9 minutes. It also featured global acting megastars – Australian Rose Byrne and comedian Will Arnett.
When a charismatic toy unicorn with questionable magical abilities is accidentally delivered to the wrong gift shop in a strange country, a forgotten Kangaroo souvenir seizes the opportunity to befriend him and escape her dusty top shelf to see the country she’s always dreamt of.
G’day took viewers on a journey around Australia in the form of a ‘Buddy’ movie with lovable animated characters and a humorous narrative, engaging kids and adults alike. The movie was launched in multiple countries simultaneously with a red carpet event in NYC featuring stars Rose Byrne and Will Arnett.
Placing the movie in multiple markets with a simultaneous international launch featuring trailers, stars and red carpet events, gave it the impact and hype we needed to reboot global interest in Australia.
To appeal to our target market, we wove our unique Australian culture into our movie narrative. So it’s focused around G’day, the iconic Australian greeting, familiar around the world as our way to welcome everyone. We also featured First Nations language, music and cultural references throughout, celebrating our indigenous heritage.
