9IFX Welcomes New Business Development and Strategy VP and Executive Producer

9iFX, a dynamic, woman-owned creative studio known for its ground breaking work at the intersection of advanced visualization and storytelling, is thrilled to announce a major new addition to the team: Matthew Thunell, who will be stepping into the role of VP of business development & strategy/executive producer. With a unique blend of entertainment, defence, and aerospace expertise, Matthew is perfectly positioned to accelerate 9iFX’s mission of creating visionary visual solutions for both the entertainment and defence sectors.

Over his 20-year career, beginning at Lucasfilm/ILM, Matthew has worked on many diverse projects, ranging from blockbuster films like Star Wars to campaigns and collaborations with Ferrari, Lady Gaga, and the U.S. Department of Defence. At Zoic Labs, Matthew was instrumental in data visualization and XR projects with Air Force Research Lab, the National Reconnaissance Office, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, where he brought stories to life with visuals that blend design, science, and purpose. 

Matthew’s professional path reflects the fusion of creativity and strategy at the heart of 9iFX. The studio’s co-founders, Tracey and Michael Miller, have long sought someone who not only understands the intricacies of VFX, but can also navigate the high-stakes world of defence and aerospace. This rare combination is exactly what Matthew brings to the table.

“We were looking for someone who could speak the language of both VFX and defence, which is no easy feat,” says Tracey. “From the moment we started talking, it was clear that Matthew wasn’t just qualified – he was the perfect fit for the next phase of 9iFX. Our conversations were more like strategy sessions, and it became obvious that his vision aligned perfectly with ours. We can’t wait to see where we’ll go with Matt on board.”

The studio is already known for creating stunning VFX for the defence industry, visualizing complex data sets and conceptualizing the future of space operations centres, as well as crafting immersive, interactive experiences for brands and audiences. With Matthew’s leadership, 9iFX will continue to push boundaries and expand into new areas of business and creative expression.

For Matthew, joining 9iFX felt like an unexpected but thrilling opportunity to do what he loves outside of the traditional Los Angeles creative community. “I’ve always been drawn to the alchemy of storytelling and technology, and when I spoke with Tracey, I immediately felt that same passion and commitment to innovation at 9iFX,” Matthew shares: “It wasn’t just about the projects we’d be working on; it was about the Portland culture, the mission, and the chance to help shape the next chapter of this incredible studio. We’re already thinking big and laying the foundation for exciting new things.”
