.mem, the world’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) add-on for WhatsApp, which lets people turn their group chat highlights into video memories, has launched today - created by Deutsche Telekom and creative agency, Saatchi & Saatchi.
Group chats are treasure troves of incredible memories big and small – from the group holiday of a lifetime to a collective birthday party photo dump or just witty day-to-day banter. However, all these meaningful moments often get buried under an avalanche of new messages and forgotten amidst the endless scroll. Deutsche Telekom and Saatchi & Saatchi have collaborated to create an easy way to resurface these collective group chat moments in a quick, easy and shareable way.
By integrating into WhatsApp groups, .mem captures audio, video, emoji reactions, and texts, shared within the group and transforms them into a ‘stories’ style format, recapping the very best of the group chat. These stories can be easily shared across social media platforms, allowing users to relive their favourite moments and share them with friends outside the chat.
.mem stands out with its unique AI-driven approach, using artificial intelligence to give each group chat a narrative based on data points, including interactions and reactions. Unlike traditional memory services that focus primarily on personal photos, .mem captures the collective experience from everyone’s point of view, not just one person. This results in a more vivid and immersive type of digital memory. By incorporating multimedia formats, .mem truly brings to life the essence of being there, making shared moments more engaging and memorable.
Ulrich Klenke, chief brand officer at Deutsche Telekom, said, “We have already connected young people across Europe to thousands of free music experiences through our ‘Summer to Remember’ platform. With our innovative .mem tool, we now enable our digital super users to relive and share their most meaningful moments. In a time of online personalisation, shared experiences are becoming increasingly valuable.”
Franki Goodwin, CCO, Saatchi & Saatchi, stated, "Our incredible long-term partnership with DT has always set out to be on the cutting edge of technology in the most human way possible. .mem is one of those ideas that as soon as you hear about it, you think ‘how the hell does this not exist already?’ – it’s a coming together of design craft, ai and a deep rooted social behaviour to create a tool for everyone to capture their summer memories. Try it!”
To start using the innovative .mem tool, simply add the contact number to your phone. Next, include .mem in your WhatsApp group chat as you would do with any other contact. Share your images, videos, voice notes, and comments as you normally would during an event or trip. When you're ready to create your .mem, just say, "Make me a @mem," and the AI will get to work. In approximately 20 minutes, you'll receive a video ready to be shared on social media. The tool launches in Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, North Macedonia, and Germany.
The tool builds on “The Summer to Remember” campaign which launched earlier this summer to inspire Gen Z to make more memories. Deutsche Telekom has offered young people the chance to win tickets and attend festivals across Europe, including Melt (GER), Rolling Loud Europe (AT) and Lollapalooza (GER).
