In a world where nostalgia reigns supreme, Armoury's latest creation for Airtasker is a real blast from the past, and was brought to life by the inventive minds of Mr. President creatives Joe Stone and Dan Ball and director Mr. Yankey. This punchy, retro, hyper-saturated film has taken Airtasker's marketing strategy to a whole new level.
Picture this: a time-travelling experience back to the '90s, complete with Tamagotchis, slap bracelets, and an endless dose of nostalgia. When director Mr. Yankey first laid eyes on this creative concept, his inner child couldn't contain the excitement, and the infectious enthusiasm of the Mr President creatives made the project irresistible from the get-go.
Taking a step back into the '90s required a touch of technical wizardry. The biggest challenge was creating the iconic Tardis effect – fitting a '90s den within a shed and navigating the camera through it in a single shot. With limitations on set size, Mr. Yankey and his team had to meticulously plan every detail, from lens choice to blocking to make this vision a reality.

One of the standout elements of this creative endeavour is its childlike wonder and sheer goofiness to show just how fun outsourcing your daily tasks can be. The project thrived on the hilarity and lightheartedness that makes us all nostalgic for our youth, while grateful for the technology of our present. Mr. Yankey poured his own unique style into the mix, adding quirky touches like the stretchy 6ft arm and the unforgettable toe popping out of the shoe cap.
Creating a '90s aesthetic wasn't just about (over 20) lava lamps and neon colours. Mr. Yankey and his team had to navigate the challenge of staying true to the era while maintaining Airtasker's brand identity. From recreating iconic '90s games, movies, bands, and shows to coming up with clever parodies like "Spice Rack" and "Adolescent Karate Gerbils," Dan and Joe's amazing creativity shone through.
Casting was a crucial piece of the puzzle. The ad required comedy, chemistry, and dance skills. The characters, Dan and Rose, needed to convince us they could instantly become friends. The ability to let loose while dancing was more important than technical prowess, and the amazing choreographer Kloé Dean worked her magic to bring out the best of the brilliant cast of Gerald Zarcilla and Helena Fenton.
A project of this magnitude is a team effort. The visual effects team at 'We Are Covert' delivered smashing results. Sean Hogan at The Hogan sound provided an incredible, nostalgic soundtrack. Oli Hogan brought the '90s den to life, Kloé Dean infused the cast with confidence, Rik's meticulous work ensured stunning visuals, and Jack Meredith maintained a calm and happy set. Huge thanks to producer Sarah Mavity for her tireless efforts and dedication to this creative.
Finally, very special recognition has to go to the team at Mr President who were exceptionally collaborative from start to finish.
So, get ready to laugh, reminisce, and dance your heart out in Airtasker's '90s-inspired ad, a brilliant journey into the past that's nothing short of comedic gold!
