Binge Watch Our 2022 Film Club Showcase

A showcase of every short film and the directors behind them that we profiled this year

LBB Film Club was created at the beginning of the pandemic in response to the shut down of the globe's film festivals, and in turn, directors' biggest opportunities to market their latest work.

Since then, we're thankful that film festivals have returned. But that hasn't meant an end for LBB Film Club: it's evolved into a dynamic news channel of its own, a place on Little Black Book for non-branded creativity amidst the advertising that makes up the bulk of the site.

With 2022 coming to an end, what better time to round up all of the good things popping off in LBB Film Club during this year?

Forever Young

Directors: Michel and Nico

“This is just the story about two creative kids who want to create their first short film… This is just the story about two creative dads who got nothing else to do…”

The Reality

Director: Trevor Clarence

“A mild-mannered florist needs a win and agrees to swap jobs for the day with a paramedic. Turns out... being a paramedic is a little bit harder than being a florist.”

The Black Cop: A Villain, A Victim and A Hero

Director: Cherish Oteka

“A gay former police officer relives his experience of being both the victim and perpetrator of racism in the police force.”

Masculinity

Director: Christian Padron

“‘Masculinity’, a film from The Healing Project and the first single from Samora Pinderhughes' upcoming album ‘GRIEF’.”

Rise

Director: Chris Thomas

“In a place like Snowdonia, Wales, weather forecasts are often dotted with high chances of thunderstorms, rain and strong winds. When climber Delyth Owen was diagnosed in 2017 with a Functional Neurological Disorder, manifesting in seizures and episodic loss of control of mind and body, her inner landscape began to mirror the tumultuous Welsh skies. For Owen, finding strength and serenity on the sheer rock of a severe landscape has become much more than an athletic pursuit or a mental exercise, as she realises along the way that the challenges of life are not an impasse but another wall to be scaled.”

Speed of Sound

Director: Jade Ang Jackman

“‘Speed of Sound’ is a portrait of self-professed adrenaline junkie, Carina Edlinger. But the film is a lot more than a profile of an athlete. Carina is a uniquely fascinating person. The Austrian visually impaired Paralympic cross-country skier made her Paralympic debut during the 2018 Winter Paralympics just at the age of 19 and claimed her first Paralympic medal in the women's 7.5km classic cross-country skiing event. At the 2022 Winter Paralympics and won a gold medal in the 1.5km sprint and a bronze medal in the 10km free event. With only 1.5% vision she speeds downhill at 80km/h.”

Grace

Director: Brian Patto

“A father living in war-torn Iraq protects his daughter from violent fanatics, using the innocent game of hide-and-seek.”

the rift

Director: Olivier Lescot

“‘The rift’ is a collision between the raw simplicity of a black and white film and the tension-loaded atmosphere of an old school spy film, all tied together with some brilliant animation.”

Crush

Director: Stash Capar

“Candice ‘Candi Crush’ Mitchell started competing in Muay Thai at an age where most fighters are thinking of retirement.  That didn't stop her from becoming a world champion.  Presented by the Toronto Kickboxing & Muay Thai Academy.”

A Fire Inside

Directors: Justin Krook and Luke Mazzaferro

“When a volunteer firefighter drives his car into almost certain death during the worst fires in Australian history, he does it because he ‘has a job to do’. Three months later, the fires are out but his nightmares are just beginning. What’s tormenting him, however, isn’t the memory of flames. Turning a sensitive lens on the unprecedented devastation of Australia’s Black Summer bushfires, from a country-wide emergency to the astonishing stories of help that emerged.”

LILITH & EVE

Director: Samuel de Ceccatty

“LILITH & EVE is a short adult comedy animation and feminist re-imagining of the Adam and Eve story, in which Eve accidentally bumps into Lilith, Adam's first wife and equal.”

UÝRA - The Rising Forest

Director: Juliana Curi

“Uýra, a trans-indigenous artist travels through the Amazon forest on a journey of self-discovery using performance art and ancestral messages to teach indigenous youth and confront structural racism and transphobia in Brazil. Uýra is the alter-ego of Emerson, a non-binary performance artist and ecologist of indigenous origin living in Manaus, Brazil. Marginalized as an Indigenous, queer, and trans person, Uýra travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art and exquisite transformations — often created from materials found in the nearby forest — to spread their message of environmental protection and promote LGTBQ+ rights.”

Faded, Not Yet Gone

Director: Lucas Dabrowski

“A short film about a young man’s struggle as he’s caught between the pull of family tradition and the possibility of seeking another calling in the world.”

The Wake

Director: Luis Gerard

“The Wake is the story of a 15-year-old boy Walter and his deaf younger brother Martin, raised in the parents' funeral business home. While the parents' operate the family business, the boys break into the deceased's homes unaware of what consequences may be waiting for them.”

God Bless You, My Son

Director: Nathan Miller

“A short documentary about Dancehall and Trap Dancehall in Jamaica. The youth of Jamaica have been gifted the power of the internet, and they are here to tell their own stories, young prodigies of their esteemed forefathers in Dancehall. Despite the success of the upcoming artists, the sound has been met with backlash due to many of the songs' explicit content pertaining to violence…”

Photo Booth

Director: Roxy Rezvany

“Photo Booth is a romantic comedy drama about a mixed immigrant couple in 1970s London and their attempts to navigate both Britain's immigration laws and their relationship with each other.”
