The founder and executive producer of Someplace Nice on spotting talent and letting them thrive

Estelle Weir has been creating content for two decades. Starting off her career at some of the most established production shops in Canada and quickly grew through the ranks before moving her skills over to music and sound production.

After two years learning the audio side she made the jump back to production as executive producer. In 2013 she moved on to start Someplace Nice, with Chilo Fletcher, where she continues to grow the brand through commercial and digital initiatives.


LBB> What experience or moment gave you your biggest lesson in leadership? 


Estelle> Ask for what you want - never expect someone to just hand you something, or read your mind. I learned that very early on in this business. It was a lightbulb moment for me.


LBB> Did you know you always wanted to take on a leadership role? If so how did you work towards it and if not, when did you start realising that you had it in you?


Estelle> I honestly had no idea this career even existed. I started as a receptionist at a production company and worked my way up. 


LBB> When it comes to 'leadership' as a skill, how much do you think is a natural part of personality, how much can be taught and learned?


Estelle> I think leadership is about a few core traits, the best leaders are firm but fair and can spot talent and drive. It's true what they say - surround yourself with the best people and let them thrive.


LBB> What are the aspects of leadership that you find most personally challenging? And how do you work through them?


Estelle> Personalities in the workspace can sometimes be tricky, empathy is the best tool to put yourself in the other person's place and help you understand how to approach it. 


LBB> Have you ever felt like you've failed whilst in charge? How did you address the issue and what did you learn from it?


Estelle> Taking ownership when things take a turn and being accountable is the only way to correct the issue.


LBB> In terms of leadership and openness, what’s your approach there? Do you think it’s important to be as transparent as possible in the service of being authentic? Or is there a value in being careful and considered?


Estelle> I think being a female can be more challenging at times in a leadership role - While it's important to be open, I do find at times people can cross a line with you that they would never even consider doing to a male. 


LBB> What are the most useful resources you’ve found to help you along your leadership journey?


Estelle> Having someone to talk to and always has your back - my business partner and I have made this company successful together - and having someone to always talk things through has helped me stay focused on what really matters.
