BRBR is a film collective who, over the the last ten years, have become known as one of Europe’s most promising talents. Their work hovers between a heightened, otherworldly aesthetic and powerful, raw storytelling, and has picked up multiple awards at Cannes Lions, YDA, Ciclope, Shots and more.
BRBR is made up of a director duo Luis Rojo and Nacho A Villar, who regularly partner with cinematographer Michal Babinec and a few other trusted collaborators. They met in 2013 coming from a mixed background of film school and fine arts, and since then have continually created boundary-pushing films at the intersection of commercials, music and visual arts.
Across an eclectic body of work, they are most known for cinematic visuals that portray a reflection of contemporary society and how we can help contribute towards it. Alongside successful commercial campaigns for the likes of Salvation Army, VW and Pornhub Toys, their acclaimed series ‘Heroes of Today’ brought together several brands to join forces and transform society. This powerful collection of short films addresses taboo topics in sport like racism, homophobia, sexual abuse and discrimination, and uses a range of narrative techniques including deep-fake and face replacement technology. Heroes of Today was awarded in a range of categories at Cannes Lions, Ciclope, Shots, and was featured in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Creators Showcase.
BRBR’s work in music videos has been met with equal regard. With an experimental visual-arts and high-fashion aesthetic, their ‘Exil’ promo for techno ensemble Territoire premiered on Nowness - and was celebrated as the ‘Best Musical Project of the Year’ on that platform. It was recognised at Berlin Music video awards.
Their debut feature film La Mala Familia is currently available on Netflix. Featuring non professional actors cast to play themselves, this genre-pushing film explores the story of a group of friends reuniting during one member's prison leave, only to confront a problem from their past that could land them all in jail. The film premiered at the Seville European Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and was celebrated as the Best Spanish Documentary of the Year and longlisted for the Academy Awards.
Whatever the medium, BRBR believe that filmmaking is all about open-minded teamwork, and that collaboration (including with agencies and production partners) is the best way to shepherd the highest level of execution. In an ever-changing landscape, the collective are focused on finding new ways of producing and creating innovative work.
BRBR said, "Teaming up with Spindle feels like we've found our creative soulmates right here in London. It's a casa where we feel like family. We've been following their trajectory for a long time before joining and we feel so aligned when it comes to style, ambition, and what makes great work tick. We're at the beginning of an exciting journey, and feel so ready and excited about forging new partnerships and bringing fresh, boundary-pushing stories to life."
Mayling Wong, Spindle executive producer said, "BRBR’s command of story telling craft and compassionate direction in their work has left an indelible impression on me. Each piece of work is beautifully executed technically, whilst containing a rare soulful core that resonates with humanity. I am so excited to see them take on the UK market and grow within the Spindle family.
