Sabine Saifi, senior digital designer, Cheil, on how to break free from being creatively blocked

Every creative knows that moment when the ideas just stop flowing. You’re staring at a blank screen, the canvas, or the notebook, and…nothing. Fact is, it happens to the best of us! In a world buzzing with inspiration, why do we sometimes find ourselves utterly uninspired? If you're a creative living in Dubai, like me, you might relate even more. Despite living in a city with a futuristic skyline and desert expanses which seem like endless sources of inspiration, yet at times, they can also leave you feeling boxed in, yearning for the familiar soul of places like home. Lebanon, where inspiration feels woven into the fabric of every mountain, old souk, and coffee-stained café. Where stories linger in the scent of cedar trees, laughter echoes down the narrow streets, and each sunset over the Mediterranean feels like a brushstroke on a timeless canvas, a place where creative block felt less frequent. So, what's really happening when we're creatively blocked, and how can we break free? Here's what I've come to realise, along with some tips I follow—based on my own experience and insights from other creatives—to overcome it, or at least try to.

Why do we get creative blocks?

Creative blocks can stem from various sources, a mix of environment, emotion, and pressure. Personally, I’ve noticed that I experience creative blocks more frequently living in Dubai than in Lebanon, and I’m still figuring out how to navigate it. Dubai is a sensory whirlwind—an energetic hub full of sights, sounds, and a vibrant buzz that keeps your mind racing, with constant information overload, a rush for competition and opportunities that can sometimes feel overwhelming. When overstimulated, our minds shut down to protect us from burnout, which, in our field, affects the entire creative process. In this fast-paced, high-stakes environment, many creatives, including myself, feel the pressure to produce "perfect" work, a standard that often suffocates creativity before it even begins. On top of that, the expat culture often feels disconnected from its roots. For me, Lebanon had a natural sense of artistic soul, a slower, more textured rhythm to life that inspires effortlessly. Whereas in Dubai, that sense of connection can be more elusive, but overcoming this challenge can add depth and resilience to creative work, offering an opportunity to thrive within the city’s dynamic expat community.

Tips to reignite creativity and understanding this block

1. Change your scene—even just a little

Us creatives, we thrive in new environments, even if it's just a different corner of our usual workspace. Sometimes, a simple change of scenery can break the creative block. That’s why working on a laptop can be helpful—it lets you move around, go for a walk, and shift your atmosphere. A fresh setting can push you beyond your creative boundaries and burst the bubble you’re stuck in. If you’re still feeling stuck, try moving your body—go to the gym, or exercise outdoors. Getting your blood pumping while breathing in fresh air can clear your mind and reinvigorate you. I don’t usually do this, but it’s always in the back of my mind that I really should. And if all else fails, sleep on it. Nothing a good night’s rest can’t fix; it works wonders for both mind and body.

2. Let go of the perfection mindset, write away & research

One thing I’ve learned from other creatives is the importance of writing down whatever thoughts come to mind, no matter how random. I’m not the type to carry around a pen and notebook, but I do jot down ideas on my phone since it’s always with me. You never know when inspiration will strike, and having a place to capture those thoughts can be invaluable. In this fast-paced field, it's easy to feel rushed, but sometimes, slowing down and allowing yourself to make mistakes can lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Taking a break from the pressure to create and thinking about it can also give your mind the space it needs to relax and reset—it's hard to generate ideas when you're stressed. Learn to let go if it’s not working out or do more research. Research, research, research and experiment with new tools and techniques. Negative thinking is our worst enemy and the more we fixate on creating something flawless, the more likely we are to freeze up.

3. Surround yourself with a creative community

Isolation is a major contributor to creative blocks. No matter where you are, you can find inspiration through connection. Talk to your team, engage with strangers, or consult with friends and family—even if they don’t have a creative background. The collective energy of others can work wonders, helping you see things in a different light.

4. Rediscover playfulness in both work and life

Creativity is meant to be playful, it thrives on fun and freedom. When was the last time you truly enjoyed your work? We drown ourselves into client briefs which can be restricting at times, making us forget the joy of passion projects that reflect who we are and ignite our creativity. Let your mind wander and have fun, both in your work and life. When everything is go-go-go, unplug from the world every now and then, disconnect digitally and let yourself sink into a freer and more creative mindset. And then enjoy the activities that refresh you, whether it’s a movie, a concert, an art class/exhibition, arcade or simply wandering the mall. This freedom helps prevent burnout and brings fresh perspectives. Make sure you also invest in self-care and your mental health.

To conclude, we all have our different ways of dealing with creative blocks and there’s no right or wrong way of conquering it. Remember, this phase will pass, and you’re not alone or a failure—creative ruts are normal. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and keep an open mind; inspiration can spark from anywhere. Embrace this journey of ups and downs, curiosity and connection—it might just lead to your best work yet, as some of my own best pieces have emerged from times when I felt most stuck. Here I am in Dubai—a city thriving with ambition, confidently racing towards the future. I’m still learning to embrace its dynamic energy, a colourful harmony of cultures and infinite goals, where inspiration pulses through the city’s ever-evolving futuristic vision. There’s a part of me that will always be nostalgic for Lebanon’s unique stillness, where time lingers and life unfolds at its own gentle, beautifully chaotic pace, a familiar rhythm. Yes, Dubai functions differently from home, but it’s teaching me new ways to challenge myself, grow, and adapt by creatively blending the comforting rhythm of my roots with the boundless dreams this city has to offer. It’s a reminder that inspiration is both an internal journey and an external adventure, taking us from cherished origins to the thrill of new horizons.
