Best-selling indie band Courteeners have recently released the first in a series of new music promos featuring music from their hotly anticipated new album.
The dance scenes were shot in the band’s hometown in the perennially cool Northern Quarter and include a cast of 23 extras, with two main cast members playing the protagonist’s younger and older self.Director Joe Connor who has also directed music for Coldplay and Sam Smith provided some insight: “This project was incredibly interesting to engage with. Firstly the band have written some new music, wanted a trilogy of videos to accompany interesting music, but secondly they enlisting the fantastic northern writer Emma Jane Unsworth whose recent book and film 'Animals' was received with rave reviews. The challenge with this trilogy was to present Emma's short story in music video form. Each music video in the trilogy is unique but follows the same protagonist down a rabbit whole of self discovery as she finds and follows her younger self. I wanted to visualise the concept in very unique ways to bring it into the music video world.”
Ben McFarlane, post-production head at Chief added: “We love making music videos here at Chief as it's a real opportunity for the post team to show off their dynamic flair and develop new ideas. Working with a great set of guys like The Courteeners, and a director as inventive as Joe, this has been an opportunity to express ourselves creatively. Keep your eyes out for the next films in the trilogy where the narrative progresses and the visuals become more extravagant.”
