Sylvan Esso ‘No Rules Sandy’

I made a real effort to steer clear from any album or artist that I hadn’t heard of before. I wanted to give myself the opportunity to really sit, listen and be educated. 

I find I am drawn to any kind of synth or a confident bass. ‘No Rules Sandy’ caught my attention from the moment I listened to the first track,’ Moving’. Admittedly, the album starts off frantic but as you move through the album it really does (sorry cliché) take you on a journey. 

You can really tell the album is a proper improvisation and experiment. It is quite discordant, with unsettling synths, four short and sharp interludes, as well as Meaths ethereal vocals piercing through. I really love the variety and strangeness of it all. 

My stand out tracks are probably ‘Sunburn’, it does a lovely job of blending both electronic and real instrumentation together, which is always a fave of mine. And also ‘Echo Chamber ‘just because you can’t go wrong with a classic two step garage beat and some wobbly bass! This is a great album that never fails to take you off guard with each new song. 

Lonely & Blue: The Deepest Soul of Otis Redding

Unlike my Frontline find, I decided to choose an artist that I know and love. Otis Redding. His voice is so iconic, I just couldn’t not choose this! This album is so heartfelt and rooted in emotion, and it presents Otis in his peak. The depth of his vocals is beautifully shown throughout and honestly when I listen, I get lost! It’s hard to choose just one track that stands out but I really love ‘Free Me’, the guitar strings sound so clear and the horns cary his voice along so effortlessly. If you’re a fan of soul then it would be a crime to miss out on this masterpiece - the best thing about this piece of work is by far THAT voice.
