Dave Zeevalk and Luiz Garrido Launch VFX Facility Mosaic Studios

Former Assembly leaders Dave Zeevalk and Luiz Garrido have founded a new VFX facility, Mosaic Studios. 

In the beginning of December, a flood in one of Assembly's client-facing facilities caused significant damage and unfortunately prompted the company to close at the end of 2024. In the wake of that announcement, Luiz and Dave (former VP of technology and SVP of VFX respectively) were determined not to let the team’s talent and achievements go to waste and have formed Mosaic Studios, a new entity dedicated to continuing the vision that Assembly’s VFX team had built.

Dave reflects, “We truly made lemonade out of lemons. There couldn't be a worse time of year for Assembly to close, but setting up Mosaic Studios gave us all hope for what was possible on the other side of the Christmas and New Year Holiday. Today, I think that the team would be unanimous in thinking that this was a blessing in disguise. Our bonds with one another are now stronger than ever, we're a lighter and more nimble company, laser focused on what we do. All of our creative and technical efforts are focused on improving our quality of work, pushing our efficiencies, growing our team and client base.”

Mosaic Studios is a fully operational, cloud-based VFX facility with a focus on high-end visual effects. Current projects include work for CBS/Paramount+, completing an episodic project previously underway at Assembly, and several high-profile commercial VFX jobs.

Following the announcement with Mosaic Studios’ VFX team, where Dave and Luiz shared their plans for the company, there was an overwhelming outpouring of support and excitement. Dave reflects, “Each and every person on the team expressed their excitement and desire to not only continue to work to keep the team together, but to give their time during night, weekends, and even holidays to help us build.”

The team at Mosaic Studios already have huge plans for the company, with New York currently being its main market, Dave and Luiz are looking to expand into other markets around the globe. Dave shares, “Our goal is to have a few foundational people, an EP and VFX supervisor, for example, in many markets around the world that are experts in their market and we can expand a team around to facilitate client needs.” Dave continues.

Dave and Luiz’s main goal for the company is to continue the missions that they started at Assembly. “Our goal, despite size, is always to be elastic and have the ability to expand and contract to our client's needs. We believe that the days of huge facilities in visual effects are gone, and that clients are looking for fast and nimble teams that can really focus in on their director's vision. It's all about building the right team for each project, not the biggest team.” Dave says.

Mosaic Studios have already passed a major studio’s security audit, are in the process of additional studio certification, and are working on our TPN certification. Additionally, the team is actively bidding on feature and episodic projects initiated months prior. Led by Dave Luiz’s ambition, Mosaic Studios is set to reach new creative heights this year.
