Edeka’s Brilliant 2017 Christmas Film Is Set on a Post-Apocalyptic Earth

Edeka captured the hearts of the world in 2015 with its Christmas tale of an elderly man faking his own death, just in order to get all his family together at once. 

Since then, there’s been a sense of anticipation about the wait for the German supermarket’s Christmas campaign that’s somewhat akin to John Lewis and the like. 

Well, let us tell you, 2017’s does not disappoint. Created by Jung von Matt in Hamburg and directed by Sterntag’s Matthijs van Heijningen, the four-minute film is set 100 years from now in 2117, on an Earth overtaken by some kind of robot army. Rubble litters the streets, buildings are derelict and not a human is in sight. 

One robot gets intrigued by the lettering atop a cinema. It reads, ‘Wunderbare Weihnachten” (‘Wonderful Christmas’). He heads inside and what he discovers eventually takes him on a journey outside of the battered city. You can find out where he ends up below.
