F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi and Vetor Zero team up for epic Annecy International Animation Film Festival short

Having just completed its 100th anniversary, Brazil’s animation industry is being honoured by the 2018 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. As a result, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) will be in the French town of Annecy from June 11th to 16th, helping publicise the country.

Agency F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi created a campaign to be unveiled during the event, with outdoor and digital media messages, a film advert and 10 mini documentaries that will present the industry’s trajectory to the public. The film summarises 100 years of Brazilian animation in 100 seconds.

Vetor Zero’s Alton, directors of the film, considered the challenge of creating a collaborative film with the greatest names of Brazilian animation an honour. The final product presents in chronological order an anthology of pivotal characters from the history of Brazilian animation, selected by the directors and the agency. This collection includes characters from children’s cartoon shows to TV commercials to animated feature films, like Cuca from 'The Boy And The World', nominated at the 2016 Oscars.

The directors stated that this project was only possible thanks to the work of several talented illustrators, who recreated animations that were lost in time. That’s the case with Itsuo Nakashima, invited to animate Piconzé, a character created by his father, Ypê Nakashima, author of one of the first Brazilian colour animated feature films. Walbercy Ribas, regarded by some as the “father of Brazilian animation”, recreated by hand-painting frame by frame the bird that appears in “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury”, the first Brazilian animated feature film to win the Cristal award at Annecy, and also pre-nominated for the 2014 Oscars.
