Harvey Pearson Navigates Memories and Mental Health for Puma Blue's Music Video

Director Harvey Pearson has revealed his new music video for Puma Blue's 'Velvet Leaves'. Production company My Accomplice, who represents Harvey, shares insight gained from Harvey regarding the project and its influences.

"This was a really special project and the first job out of lockdown. Jacob (Puma Blue) came to me with this beautiful track and the touching story it told, one of family and getting through the hard times - balancing on the line of life and death. The video is a small tribute to Jacob’s sister, exploring memories and an abstract journey through mental health", said Harvey.

Jacob (Puma Blue) describes the story of the song: “I wrote this song very quickly one day last year, but it took much longer to process what I was trying to say. Five years ago, my sister was in a really bad place and one day we nearly lost her. By the grace of the universe she survived, and now words can’t communicate how proud I am of the strong, beautiful, wise woman she is. This song is just a reflection on that day, how much I love her, about how we came together as a family, about the veil between death and life and about the toxic masculinity that had a hold of me when I couldn’t or wouldn’t express myself at the time."

"When Hunter (DP) and I discussed how we’d shoot this piece, we landed on shooting the present-day digitally and pushing the footage into a very filmic yet contemporary place, whilst shooting 16mm for the flash-back and memory moments." added Harvey. "This in conjunction with real, archived VHS footage discovered by Jacob, created what I think is a very unique look which defines each stage and era of the film.
