Your favourite entourage of vampires, werewolves and demons are back in Spectrum’s latest collection of Monsters’ commercials from agency Something Different and O Positive director David Shane. The gang is caught again complaining about the real bad guys out there – satellite, mobile or cable companies – and their annoying, you might even say evil, business practices.
'Diner' and 'Uninvited Guest' are the latest spots. 'Diner' has the gang blending in over lunch, that is until Death arrives sporting his new floral robe. He spilled a smoothie on his black robe because he got angry about T-Mobile’s bad mobile plan. 'Uninvited Guest' brings us Ventriloquist and Death watching the game on ESPN from the comfort of their living room. Vampire’s at the window pleading to join them because his Sling TV doesn’t carry ESPN. But proving once again he is a jinx, Ventriloquist and Death opt not to invite Vampire in. Two additional commercials featuring the Spectrum Monsters - 'Life' and 'Moving' - will air in early 2019.
The Monsters commercials now number close to 20 and are as popular as ever. Director David Shane comments: “Spectrum gives us the freedom to play with the characters and the stories. It’s an extremely trusting relationship. They know we’ll get what they need, and in return they allow us to explore and play. It’s a cool collaboration.”
Something Different chief creative/co-founder Tommy Henvey comments: “From day one Spectrum knew we weren’t trying to make a campaign about monsters, it was always about people being misled by shady deals and practices. The fact that it’s the monsters that are appalled just helps us make them funny and more memorable, which never hurts in a category like this. So they give us the freedom to really have a good time with it.”
Something Different managing partner/co-founder Patti McConnell adds: “We started Something Different so we could do the work we wanted to do, with the people we wanted to work with. This campaign has been exactly that, so I guess we got something right.”
