Nissan Have Made the World's First Wearable Device to Help Predict the Behaviour of the Sea

We are incredibly pleased to finally share the latest project from Glassworks Special Projects division Xavi's Lab. After many months of research and work in collaboration with Nissan, 'Percebeiro Shield' is born. 

 

In the Northwest corner of Spain in the region of Galicia, brave fishermen known as the Percebeiro, risk their lives in the crashing Atlantic waves, collecting a delicacy from the rocky coastline called Percebe, otherwise known as Goosneck Barnacles. Many websites list this delicacy as the nations favourite seafood. As a result prices can reach heady heights especially at Christmas. This is often when the seas are most dangerous. 

Xavi's Lab has been working closely with Nissan developing Percebeiro Shield a device worn by the fishermen that predicts the seas behaviour, warning them when the most dangerous waves are approaching. Through a LIDAR scanner, Xavi’s Lab has developed a software that scans the sea and through the a device attached to the neoprene of their wetsuits, the ‘Percebeiro’ receive different alerts indicating the current state of the sea so they can anticipate the risk. Potentially this device will save lives and minimise the risk of injury during this extremely risky form of fishing.
