NOWNESS, a movement for creative excellence in storytelling, is celebrating the extraordinary of every day. It has become the go to source of inspiration and influence across art, design, fashion, beauty, music, food and travel.
NOWNESS' new short film 'Unity,' directed by Mollie Mills, presents the Unity Skateboarding community, an inclusive space for LGBTQA youth. Every weekend in public squares and green spaces across the Bay Area, skate collective Unity Skateboarding roll out to reclaim a sport that has long been a stronghold for cis-gendered, heteronormative men. Mollie Mills joined the crew’s weekly ‘board meeting’ to profile how its growing members are creating inclusive spaces for LGBT and gender non-conforming youth.
Mollie Mills' short films offer a snapshot of life and youth culture the same way a photojournalist shoots a series. She uses a hybrid of documentary and fiction that allows her to create beautiful but authentic content, always with an undercurrent of poignancy that celebrates the misrepresented; whether that be empowering women, the LGBTQ community, having diverse and unconventional casts or defying stereotypes.
