In celebration of World Radio Day, the team from music composition and sound design collective, Otis, treat readers to their top four radio ads of their creation.
Tune in to be transported into a tennis tournament with Tennis Australia, a spaghetti western with LDV, a true crime podcast with Canva, and a ray of sonic sunshine with Golden Circle.
This year’s United Cup campaign highlighted the tournament as tennis - turned up! So for its radio campaign, we composed a high energy track, featuring the sounds you’d hear in the stadium atmosphere: crowds chanting, sneakers squeaking on the court, tennis balls being smashed, and more.
For the launch of LDV’s newest ute - we went full-tilt in creating parodies of spaghetti western soundtracks and paying homage to Ennio Morricone. This is our favourite of the trilogy we produced.
The goal for this spot was to create a true crime podcast world where the listener learns of a story of someone ruining a presentation, but luckily Canva is there to save the day. Our engineer created a bespoke music bed and leaned into the sounds of classic true crime podcasts to really immerse listeners into the experience.
One of the main challenges was bridging the two worlds together - the crime podcast as Canva’s solution - as they were very different tonally. Creating the sonic bed underneath with the same tonic helped link the two along with a suspenseful riser to provide a climax point.
It’s not everyday that the brief for a radio spot is to make a great track. The entire campaign was music-led and allowed us to work with two great singers to translate the feeling of sunshine sonically.
