Digital Extremes tasked Passion Paris to produce the 2D animated film with director David Pagaille

For the release of Styanax, the 50th ‘Warframe’ of the eponymous game, Digital Extremes tasked Passion Paris, a Passion PICTURES company, to produce an ambitious, traditionally 2D animated film directed by David Pagaille.

This marks the second collaboration with newly signed David and Passion Paris, and results in a film as ambitious as the game itself, combining story, narration and intense action.

David was immediately taken with the project and the creative experience. His vision for the film, fed by extensive research on the history of the game, quickly appealed to the Digital Extremes team with whom Passion Paris worked closely to develop a scenario that is both subtle and striking.

David loves a challenge and chose a colourful and evolving graphic approach, with the aim to have the colours and atmosphere of the film evolve as emotions progress within the story. This feat is a success, showcasing a palette of colours and ambiances that constantly adapt to the evolving storyline, like a mirror reflecting the protagonists’ emotions!

David: “My aesthetic, and therefore artistic wish to have the panel of colours evolve as the story advances was definitely a challenge for all of the teams”

Marc Bodin-Joyeux, EP/MD at Passion Paris: “We’re proud to have produced such an innovative and stylish animation using traditional 2D techniques for Warframe and Digital Extremes”

The film was entirely produced in the Passion Paris studios by a large team of over 30 artists and technicians. It took a year to produce a five minute and 30 second film with an incredible visual and narrative quality.

David: “It was a real challenge to transpose the universe of a 3D game into a 2D animated film, but thanks to a close collaboration with Passion Paris and Digital Extremes, the challenge has been met and I had a lot of fun in the process!”

Passion Paris is very proud to have produced this unique film, half-way between a trailer and a short film.
