Music and sound company PIRATE SOUND helped provide sweet, soothing relief for Fisherman’s Friend's latest campaign, ‘Reel it In’. Working with agency Arrivals + Departures, and directed by The Perlorian Brothers through Merchant, PIRATE SOUND crafted the nautical, hotel-themed soundtrack to the spot.
Set in an elegant, seaside hotel, the boutique surroundings and atmosphere are disrupted by the sounds of irritating coughs, congestion and splutters. Affecting the porter, singer and hotel guests, Fisherman’s Friend appears at times of need with a selection of soothing lozenges.
Experimenting with sound ideas and concepts, PIRATE SOUND crafted audio cues to reinforce the whimsical mood of the spot and connect each scene. Blending nautical and realistic sounds seamlessly together for comedic and atmospheric effect, PIRATE SOUND made use of a creaking ship hull in place of a creaking door, and incorporated waves and water noises within scene transitions instead of typical ‘whoosh’ noises.
Sound designer Kyle Anderson comments, “The best way to go at this was to provide a lot of different options and create a collaborative space for experimentation with sound. Collectively with The Perlorian Brothers and Arrivals + Departures, we spent a lot of time getting into the weeds of every sound, experimenting and answering questions like ‘what door creak sound effect matches the comedy of this dolphin vocalisation?’. It was about finding the right balance between realism and over-exaggeration to best compliment the visuals, rhythm and humour of the spots. And I think we landed in a really great place.”
