The Sundance-winning documentary Porcelain War, directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev, has secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. A key element of the film’s storytelling lies in its breath taking animated sequences, crafted by the Warsaw-based creative house, BluBlu Studios.
“It’s hard to put our emotions into words right now,” shares Gabriela Jabłońska, executive producer at BluBlu Studios. “We’re thrilled that the film has been recognised by The Academy and deeply proud to have contributed to its incredible journey.”
BluBlu Studios dedicated over a year to producing the animations, which bring to life the works of Ukrainian artist Anya Stasenko. The team meticulously recreated her intricate style, animating her vision on 3D surfaces of animal-shaped figurines. The result is a mesmerising fusion of Ukrainian folklore and history, rendered in motion with extraordinary attention to detail.
“It was a challenging yet immensely rewarding process,” says Jed Skrzypczyk, executive creative director at BluBlu. “Each sequence required a unique storytelling approach, but Anya and Slava’s moving narratives and resilience were constant sources of inspiration. Every frame felt meaningful.”
Since its triumphant debut at Sundance, Porcelain War has garnered over 50 awards and honours, including nominations from the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Producers Guild of America (PGA), as well as wins at numerous prestigious film festivals.
