Since the organisation first got its start, Girls in the Game has been helping girls find their voice, discover their strength and achieve the confidence needed to be the game-changers they were born to be. Dedicated to the whole girl, Girls in the Game programs encourage physical and emotional health to promote active minds, bodies and hearts.
This year, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Girls in the Game and the creative teams at gyro have partnered with the Wintrust Bank to create 'POW!' a mural designed by local artist Monica Klasa. 'POW!' celebrates the 50,000-plus girls in the Chicago, Baltimore, Dallas and Bloomington areas that Girls in the Game has helped empower. 'POW!' depicts young girls using sports such as soccer, basketball and volleyball to confidently take on fear, doubt and other obstacles they face every day.
Don Dunbar, creative director at gyro’s Chicago and Denver offices, said: “It’s not every day you get to have millions of people in Chicago see your agencies’ work. When Wintrust offered up its iconic, three-sided billboard alongside the Kennedy Expressway to Girls in the Game, an organisation that has been near and dear to our hearts for nearly seven years, the decision was easy. After reviewing all the submitted ideas, we landed on a concept we couldn’t be prouder of.”
The 'POW!' mural uses vibrant colours and dynamic images to convey the playful nature Girls in the Game incorporates into each of its programs and events. Klasa, also a creative director, said: “It was a thrill to be asked to help gyro with this beautiful project. Knowing that this mural would launch in the springtime, the initial thought was to have strong, athletic girls bursting out of spring flowers. As I sketched, the action behind that thought became words. Bursts of movement evolved into the idea of girls crushing obstacles with their strength. If you squint, you may still be able to see the faint notion of spring flowers, but now with more ‘boom.’ Navigating the world as a girl can be tricky, and it’s an honour to give young
ladies a new way to think about their potential.”
