Non profit and Momentum Worldwide turn graphics and characters from short film 'Peppermint Spiral' into bold awareness campaign

Globally, one in seven 10–19-year-olds experience anxiety and depression, and every day sees 17 young lives tragically taking their own lives. The need to address teen mental health has never been more visible. These statistics highlight a deeper, often untold story of silent suffering and unheard voices. 

Reel Start, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering youth through film, is on a mission to change that narrative. This year, Reel Start showcased an impactful film, Peppermint Spiral, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), aiming to shine a light on the critical issues that teens face daily. 

To ensure this message resonated far and wide, industry A-listers were invited to witness and champion the cause. The visual identity at the premiere was vital in amplifying the voices of affected teens, turning whispers into roars, silence into dialogue, and darkness into light.  

Inspired by the graphics and characters in the short film, the visual language highly showcases the 'Shadow Monster' character and 'Peppermint Candy' element that represent the anxiety, addiction and struggles that teens battle with. An illustrative approach, consistent with the film, was applied in contrast with a bold colour palette to create a strong call to action. 

The approach was anything but conventional. From eye-catching movie posters to impactful washroom stall decals, every element of the design was carefully crafted to highlight the battles teens face. Integrating QR codes into the designs transformed every interaction into an opportunity to support Reel Start, making these invisible struggles visible. 

This event was not just a film premiere; it was a movement. Through thoughtful visual design, the message amplified the challenges teens battle, ensuring that their stories are both seen and heard. The design approach brought the fight to the forefront, engaging attendees at the premiere in a meaningful way, raising awareness around this important cause and making a difference.
