Slang Music Group Creates House Music Version of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing'

"Lift Every Voice and Sing," often referred to as the Black National Anthem, holds profound significance within the Black community. Written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson, the song emerged during a pivotal period in American history, marked by racial segregation, disenfranchisement, and the ongoing struggle for civil rights. The hymn's powerful verses celebrate the journey from slavery to freedom, acknowledging the hardships faced by generations of Black Americans while also exuding hope for a brighter future.

Vince [Lawrence] decided to create a House Music version of the song because “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and House Music share a commonality in uniting communities through a universal language of music. Both serve as anthems that transcend cultural boundaries, creating space for diverse backgrounds to come together in celebration. The Black National Anthem and House Music embody inclusivity, acceptance and liberation with their beats, melodies and lyrics evoking collective joy and empowerment. Just as “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is the soundtrack for the struggle for civil rights; House Music had been fostering acceptance and equality on dance floors globally. Both reflect the power of music to inspire change and bring people together in the pursuit of a harmonious society.

His rendition showcases an impressive lineup of award-winning talent, including the multi-Grammy/Tony award winner Stephanie Mills, Pastor Charles Jenkins, The New Direction Choir and Rick Robinson. The horn, arranged by Tom “Tom Tom” Washington, a Brunswick Records alum, adds a distinctive touch to the track. Washington’s expertise is highlighted by his previous work, having written similar horn parts for iconic songs like Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September” and numerous other hits.
