In collaboration with Sky Creative, Framestore were tasked with a combination of adding CG cars into archive F1 footage and creating full CG shots for the adrenaline filled Sky F1 2024 | Around the world in 24 races spot.
The team, headed up by VFX supervisor Jules Janaud, gave the impression of an ongoing race, speeding across several different F1 tracks globally.
“Each shot utilised different types of materials, requiring us to employ various techniques to ensure that the film maintained a consistent appearance.” said Jules Janaud.
Tracking and layout posed a significant challenge, as the team worked with primarily archive footage, with no camera, lens information or measurements.
“For most of the shots we needed to integrate the cars without having any lighting reference or any sort of ‘on set data’”, added Jules Janaud. “This meant we used a more direct eye appreciation and left some of the ‘physically correct’ factors aside.”
To achieve this, Jules’ team integrated cars into pre-existing stock footage, made moving images from still photographs, and incorporated CG cars into shots using drones with angles that would be impossible to capture otherwise.
For the finale, entire environments were constructed from scratch using full CG, resulting in an epic conclusion.
“This job is a patchwork of techniques and for me a sweet shop for VFX artists.” said Jules Janaud.
Around the World in 24 races, builds on Framestore’s long-standing collaboration with Sky Creative with the partnership extending to recent campaigns like the British Arrows nominated, ‘Enjoy the Ride’, directed by Framestore Pictures director, William Bartlett.
