Shola Amoo’s ‘The Last Tree’, graded by Big Buoy’s Jonny Tully, made its debut at Sundance last week where it opened the film festivals’ World Cinema Dramatic category.
Starring Sam Adewumni as Nigerian born protagonist, Femi, ‘The Last Tree’ depicts Femi’s idyllic upbringing with his foster family in rural Lincolnshire, before his birth mother returns, pushing him to relocate to the conflicting surroundings of urban South London. Unfamiliar with the values and culture of his new environment, Femi must adjust to his new life and tackle the hurdles he encounters along the way.
Big Buoy colourist, Jonny Tully, comments: "I'd wanted to grade a feature for a few years and was very lucky for this to be my first one. A director friend of mine once said the right film will come to you at the right time and he was absolutely right.
"It was incredible to work on such a great film and have that level of trust from the director, DP and producers. Segun Akinola, who recently created the score for the latest Dr Who series, composed the music for the film. He was amazing and the team really gelled.
"The brief for the grade was to be bold. We definitely were and I think it paid off. It was also such a privilege to watch it open its category with the audience at Sundance. I wish the team the best of luck with the rest of the journey."
