LBB’s April Summers speaks to the indomitable duo behind St Louis’ most enigmatic new production company
In the heart of St. Louis, a production company is redefining storytelling. Founded by Nate Townsend and Michael Hurst, Townsend Hurst is more than a creative studio; it’s a testament to friendship, legacy, and an unwavering commitment to meaningful projects. With a blue-collar work ethic that mirrors the resilience of their hometown, the duo is crafting narratives that resonate deeply—one frame at a time.

Meaningful Work That Matters

When Nate and Michael set out to create Townsend Hurst, they envisioned a space free from the constraints of traditional filmmaking. “We wanted to make the work we were passionate about– free of gatekeepers,” Nate explains. This ethos drives their approach to every project, whether commercial or pro bono. “Our ethos has always been to make great work, and let the business follow. In practice, we set aside time and resources for pro bono projects because we view these projects as our infrastructure.”

Their recent collaboration with Pianos for People, titled ‘The Gift of Music,’ exemplifies this commitment to heartfelt storytelling. The project is a profound exploration of music’s transformative power, crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

Another stellar example is 'Limitless', a project for Leica Camera which shines a light on a rare pain condition. Receiving Best Director and Best Cinematography nods last year, the powerful short film tells photographer Terry LaRue's story through a thoughtful, inspiring and hopeful first-person narrative.

“Our focus is on quality over quantity,” Michael emphasises. “Every project receives the utmost care, and we believe in the power of human storytelling.” In an industry increasingly dominated by data analytics and AI, Townsend Hurst stands apart, driven by a hunger for authentic, human connection.

A Friendship Rooted in Legacy

The connection between Nate and Michael runs deeper than just a shared vision; it’s anchored in a long-standing friendship that began with Nate’s father, Tom Townsend, a stalwart in the St. Louis advertising community.

“My dad was my best friend and mentor,” Nate tells me, recalling how Tom’s kindness and dedication shaped his own creative career path. It was Tom who first introduced Nate to Michael, sparking a collaboration that would eventually evolve into Townsend Hurst.

Michael recalls their initial meeting fondly. “Nate’s talent was evident even as a film student. His passion and creativity made a lasting impression.” Their shared history and mutual respect has resulted in a dynamic partnership where Nate’s bold ideas are tempered by Michael’s experienced execution. “I’m often firing from the hip,” Nate says, “While Michael finds the best way to bring those ideas to life. The reason our two styles coalesce is that we are aligned on the vision of our company, and have a ton of respect for one another. In practice, I’m often coming up with the ideas, and Michael is finding a way to execute them.”

In speaking with the two of them, it becomes clear that being rooted in St. Louis is a defining characteristic of Townsend Hurst. The city, often overlooked in the advertising world, has a rich history of creativity and resilience, shaped by iconic brands like Anheuser-Busch. “St. Louis is a city that punches above its weight,” Nate says. “We treat every client as if they’re our biggest, and every job as if it’s our last.” This underdog mentality permeates their work ethic and client relationships, creating a culture of trust and collaboration.

Michael adds, “The authenticity and grit of St. Louis are reflected in how we conduct business. We want our clients to feel confident that their projects are in capable hands.” Their nimble structure allows them to adapt quickly, leveraging a diverse network of partners across North America, from Vancouver to Mexico City.

A Legacy of Kindness and Creativity

Tom Townsend’s legacy is undeniably woven into the fabric of Townsend Hurst. The company’s office, located above Pianos for People—the non-profit Tom founded—serves as a daily reminder of his values. “His influence is evident in everything we do,” Michael says. “We strive to honour his commitment to authenticity and meaningful work.”

Nate’s journey is marked by personal loss, which shapes his creative lens. “I’m drawn to emotive storytelling, perhaps because of the grief I’ve experienced,” he admits. This sensitivity informs the narratives they choose to tell, focusing on deeper truths and human experiences. Their work often transcends traditional advertising, aiming to evoke genuine emotional responses. “We’re passionate about cinematic filmmaking that connects with audiences,” Michael explains. “Every project is an opportunity to explore profound narratives.”

The duo envisions growth through diversification: expanding their roster of directors, embracing new styles, and delving further into narrative filmmaking. “Our biggest challenge has been navigating the fluctuations of the industry,” Nate acknowledges. “But it has also pushed us to refine our approach and adapt.”

Michael adds, “We want to continue evolving our model to stay competitive. Our goal is to build stronger relationships with clients and explore feature film production.” The ambition is clear, yet their commitment to quality and meaningful storytelling remains at the forefront.

Ultimately, the essence of Townsend Hurst lies in the relationships they cultivate. “We put a high value on client experience,” Nate shares. “It’s not just about delivering a product; it’s about ensuring our clients feel heard and respected throughout the process.”

Michael, deeply involved in the St. Louis advertising community, echoes this sentiment. “We aim to instil a sense of trust and collaboration. Clients should feel confident that we prioritise their vision while leveraging our expertise to elevate it.”

As they navigate the evolving landscape of advertising, Townsend Hurst stands as a beacon of hope for meaningful storytelling. With their roots in St. Louis, a legacy of kindness, and a shared vision for the future, Nate and Michael are not just creating content—they are crafting narratives that resonate, inspire, and make a difference.
