Riff Raff's David Wilson takes inspiration from London's queer nightlife scene for the videos

HEAT is a project consisting of four music videos; one for every song of the HEAT EP. The videos are strung together by the narrative of Ali; a non-binary protagonist that journeys through ‘Club Heat’, a fictional, queer London nightclub.

Riff Raff director David Wilson said, “Tove Lo and SG Lewis specifically chose London as the city to bring this project to life because of the queer scene that’s here. The queer nightlife scene in London has fuelled and inspired me throughout my whole adult life. I was beyond thrilled to be selected as the director to bring this to life. Tove and SG’s made a specific request to not be the focused centre of the project. Although we feature both artists in them hero music video, ‘Heat’, from then on the crowd and the dancers of queer London are the stars on screen. This is a depiction of queer London night life, NOW. What is happening in the queer scene in 2024. Where the non-binary queer crowd is the predominant force. Parties of extreme diversity whilst including also including and celebrating the binary high-fem and ultra-masc.

Each video was a different angle on ‘Club Heat'. Depicting the breadth of experiences in nightlife.

‘Heat’ (dir. David Wilson) establishes the party.

‘Let Me Go Oh Oh’ (dir. Fa and Fon) depicts the intimacy of the toilet cubicles.

‘Busy Girl’ (dir. David Wilson) highlights queer cabaret, starring Finnbar Love, choreographed by Wet Mess.

‘Desire’ (dir David Wilson) depicts a transcendent connection between our protagonist and 'Busy Girl’ (Finnbar).

It thrilled me that we weren't recreating past scenes. This isn’t Paradise Garage, Paris is Burning or Studio 54. This is NOW. This was an extremely ambitious project, and in order to get the most mileage I teamed up with Fa and Fon who directed the videos for ‘Let Me Go Oh Oh’. Working with them was a wonderful experience and saw me stepping into a ‘creative director’ role. Seeing their vision come to life absolutely thrilled me. They brought incredible, fresh casting into their video that worked with some key members of the cast that I brought onboard for the ‘Heat’ video and their own stamp and perspective on ‘Club Heat’.”
