Oscar, Emmy and BAFTA-winning creative studio Framestore has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for its work on Wicked.
Framestore’s work was led by visual effects supervisor and creative director Jonathan Fawkner - now a four-time Oscar nominee. Working closely with the film’s director, DOP, production designer and production VFX supervisor, Jonathan and his team helped to amplify the film’s sense of magic, working on epic environments and note-perfect CG characters like Doctor Dillamond (voiced by Peter Dinklage). Framestore’s work also encompassed concept art via its in-house art department, as well as previs and postvis courtesy of Framestore Pre-production Services (FPS).
Founded and headquartered in London but with studios in Montreal, Melbourne, Mumbai, New York, Chicago and LA, the company is renowned for its deft blend of traditional artistry and cutting edge innovation. From iconic characters like Paddington and Rocket Raccoon to epic feats of worldbuilding for projects like Gravity, Barbie and Blade Runner 2049, the studio prides itself on reframing what audiences and filmmakers alike can expect from cinematic storytelling.
Fiona Walkinshaw, Framestore’s chief executive officer, film and episodic, said, “Having our filmmaking peers and partners recognising the craft, creativity and innovation of our team like this is an amazing way to start the year. Jonathan and his team really pulled out all the stops when it came to conjuring the magic of Shiz University, so a huge congratulations to every single artist, producer and technologist who helped breathe life into Wicked and craft the film's gravity-defying VFX.”
This announcement follows a recent BAFTA nomination for Wicked, and three Visual Effects Society Awards for Civil War and Fallout. Find out more here.
