Colorscope is CNN’s award-winning series exploring our perception of colour and its use across cultures, one shade at a time, via films commissioned from some of the world’s leading art, design and animation talent.
Following ‘Purple’ from Buck and ‘Blue’ by Moth Collective, ‘Orange’ is Emmanuelle Walker at Nexus Studios’ contribution to the series. Her film offers a look at the colour long associated with joy, love and immortality but which can also be toxic...
Scripted and voiced by art historian and BAFTA nominated broadcaster, Dr. James Fox, ‘Orange’ takes us on a beautifully designed and animated journey of the colour across history and culture with Emmanuelle’s elegant illustrations and deft blend of sophistication and playfulness in full effect.
Emmanuelle notes: “I was really excited about the opportunity to be part of this rainbow of films. I enjoyed working with the constraints of the colour palette, which was pretty much the only constraint I had. In my work I draw a lot of patterns, I absolutely love them, the more complicated the better. I have always wanted to see them move and ‘Orange’ gave me the opportunity to achieve this. It was a lovely challenge to find a way to transition from a Persian rug to an English tapestry!”
