Cheil's senior editor, Shalu Abdul Jabbar dives into the nuances of commercial editing

"The essence of cinema is editing," said Francis Ford Coppola. It’s the alchemy that blends raw footage into moments that pulse with life and emotion. In the world of commercial filmmaking, whether for a blockbuster or a quick social media post, editing holds a power few appreciate. A skilled edit can elevate an idea, transforming a simple scene into a story that sticks. In essence, editing is rewriting a script visually. Yet for many outside post-production, what makes an edit truly exceptional remains a mystery.

As a motion designer and editor, I’m here to dive into the nuances of commercial editing - where audience attention and emotion meet.

The Magic of Editing

Editing is more than rearranging shots; it’s about creating a rhythm and emotional resonance that guides the viewer's experience. Editing has been described as the "final performance in a symphony," where visuals, sound, and story harmonise to connect with the audience on a visceral level.

In commercials, where time is limited, that connection happens fast. Whether it’s a 30-second TV spot or a 10-second Instagram reel, editors craft these fleeting moments to make each second count. Here’s a look at how they do it.

Pacing: Setting the Tempo

Pacing controls how viewers process the story and feel about it. Whether fast-paced, slow and cinematic, or punchy and rhythmic, the pacing should always match the mood and message of the piece.

A quick pace can build urgency and excitement, while a slower one evokes emotion or tension. Great editors use pacing to create just enough space for viewers to absorb the story without lingering too long. Are you aiming for urgency? Calm reflection? A good edit aligns these emotional cues with the piece’s rhythm.

Flow: Seamless Transitions

A great edit flows naturally from one shot to the next, allowing transitions to guide the viewer’s gaze without distraction. This is where editing feels like magic: taking the audience’s eyes from one scene to the next, building anticipation or connection without jolting them out of the story.

From jump cuts to match cuts and dissolves, transitions should always feel intentional, keeping continuity intact even between drastically different scenes or settings. The result is a narrative that feels cohesive and uninterrupted.

Emotion: Crafting Connections

At its best, editing is about evoking emotion. A good edit leaves an impression; a great one stirs feelings - whether excitement, empathy, nostalgia, or humour. Editors use their intuition and storytelling skills to pull the viewer into the scene, holding onto a moment to capture emotion or cutting away to keep the story moving.

For agencies and brands, this means working closely with editors to ensure that every visual, sound, and frame aligns with the campaign’s intended emotion. A great edit knows when to linger on an emotional beat and when to move on, creating a rich experience for the viewer.

Consistency: A Cohesive Brand Vision

Editing isn’t just about visuals; it’s about upholding the brand’s identity. From colour grading to sound design, a great editor ensures every element feels part of the same world and communicates the brand’s voice.

For brands, reviewing an edit means looking beyond individual shots and focusing on the whole piece - ensuring the visuals, music, and pacing align with the established aesthetic.

Attention to Detail: Timing is Everything

The difference between a good edit and a great one often lies in the details. The timing of each cut, the rhythm of a montage, even the choice to pause in silence for impact - these are the touches that elevate commercial work from competent to unforgettable.

Editing is, ultimately, storytelling. Whether the piece is seconds or minutes long, each edit should build toward a compelling narrative. Great editors shape chaos into clarity, turning a mass of footage into a powerful story. Trust your editor to be a storyteller who brings your vision to life, making every frame matter.

What Makes a Great Edit?

Here’s a checklist for spotting exceptional edits:

  • Does the pacing match the tone and intent of the content?
  • Are transitions smooth and unobtrusive, guiding the viewer naturally?
  • Is there an emotional impact that resonates with viewers?
  • Is the brand’s identity consistent throughout?
  • Are the details, like timing and rhythm, fine-tuned for maximum impact?
  • Does the edit tell a clear, compelling story?

If you’re answering "yes" to all, you’re likely looking at an edit that works wonders.

Editing is where the magic happens in filmmaking. By focusing on pacing, flow, emotion, consistency, and storytelling, editors can create a visual experience that not only captures attention but leaves a lasting mark.

Next time you watch a commercial or swipe through a social media ad, take a closer look  the magic of editing might be more powerful than you think.
